Elias Sime Venice Biennale Art Exhibition

Elias Sime was born in 1968; he lives and works in Ethiopia. His works are exhibited at the Arsenal in Venice.

Elias Sime “Red Leaves”

A huge abstract relief painting where the red leaves are well aligned and inclined to the right on a green or purple background to compose a kind of embroidered tapestry.

Red Leaves is a work composed entirely of thousands of electrical cables, integrated circuits, and recovered electronic components, hence the purple, green, orange, grey and other colours that differentiate wires and components, all braided according to the traditional way of weaving in Ethiopia.

Elias Sime began to take an interest in this type of material about ten years ago, after having had a long career in architectural assembly and installation in Ethiopia.

On the left are concentric circles in relief on a green background with small grey figures gathered like menhirs, pointing towards the right pink and grey part marked by ample curves in relief.

“Veiled whispers” looks like a landscape seen from above, showing the impact of humanity on earth. A work inspired by ancient symbols and traditional sculpting techniques passed down orally from generation to generation in Ethiopia but made only of modern materials.
